Some homes protect you. Some never let you go
Titchfield Festival Theatre is pleased to announce its upcoming production of The House They Grew Up In, a critically acclaimed play by Deborah Bruce that delves into the intricate dynamics of family, the weight of the past, and the universal search for belonging. The play will run from 16 to 20 September.
This poignant and often surprising play centres on siblings Peppy and Daniel, whose lives are inextricably intertwined within the confines of their childhood home. Peppy, once a promising Cambridge student, and her autistic brother Daniel, inhabit a suburban London home overflowing with memories and possessions.
Director Martin Crawley said:
"The House They Grew Up In is, in turns, funny, warm, heart-breaking and surprising. I was taken by the sense that they have lived there all their lives and most of the possessions of the journey were still with them, cluttering their lives and, to a large extent, confining them in the past."
Their insular world is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Ben, an eight-year-old boy from next door, seeking solace from his own family's turbulent separation. Ben's presence forces Peppy and Daniel to confront their unique existence and their uneasy relationship with the outside world.
Martin continued:
“Peppy & Daniel depend completely upon each other, with Peppy seemingly the stronger, more self-reliant of the two siblings. They know they are in some way ‘different’ to others and avoid contact where possible. They are different, but what they want, and need is not very different to what we all need: a sense of their past, family ties and the need to survive in a sometimes hostile world. We can sympathise with their plight - even as their piles of clutter grow ever larger.”
This compelling production promises to be a memorable theatrical experience; inviting the audience to reflect that even if people choose to live their lives differently to most of us, they nonetheless deserve dignity, understanding and compassion.
