A critically acclaimed play exploring the challenges and dynamics of the British monarchy
Queen Elizabeth II is dead. After a lifetime of waiting, her son ascends the throne. A future of power. But how to rule?
Mike Bartlett’s bold play is so prescient in nature that it is no longer the future, but a real life play for today. Taking Shakespeare's form, language and style, King Charles III brings our modern day to life in a thrilling play that is not to be missed. The play performs at the Great Barn, Titchfield between 21 to 31 July 2025.
Ian Hyland directs the play, having previously directed several productions at TFT:
"King Charles III is a fascinating play because it's about our current monarchy, people we are all incredibly familiar with to varying degrees. Unlike historical figures like Henry V or Richard III, these are Shakespearean characters ripped from today's front pages."
Written in 2014, the play speculatively explores the challenges and dynamics of a Carolinian monarchy, proving remarkably prescient in some of its predictions, particularly concerning Prince Harry. While the temptation exists for the cast to impersonate these well-known figures, Ian Hylands emphasises a more nuanced approach:
"We are shading the performances with elements and colours of the real people whilst allowing our cast to interpret and find the truth of the characters, no different to how you would play Hamlet," he explains.
King Charles III is Shakespearean in style but thoroughly modern in tone and setting. It tackles contemporary discussions of royal prerogative and the real power of a modern king, with battles fought not on ancient battlefields but against the Prime Minister and public opinion.
Ian, whose directorial approach treats new plays like Shakespeare and Shakespeare like new plays, notes, "King Charles III is certainly the first play I have directed where both statements are true!"
The play vividly explores royal power, the importance of royal assent, and the monarchy's value in the 21st century. At its heart, it's a relatable family drama, albeit one involving the country's most prominent family.
Come along to the Great Barn to experience this compelling and accessible play that combines Shakespearean flair with a cutting-edge contemporary narrative.
