Titchfield Festival Theatre

Proof is a Pulitzer Prize winning first play by the American author David Aubern.

Titchfield Festival Theatre are bringing a production of this thought provoking play to the Thatched Barn Theatre in Warsash from February 17th to 27th at 7.30pm.

One of the most acclaimed plays of recent seasons, Proof explores the unknowability of love as much as it does the mysteries of mathematics. The action is centred around a young woman, Catherine, who as she celebrates her 25th birthday is confronted by the death of her father Robert a brilliant but unstable Maths professor, her estranged domineering older sister Claire and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks Robert left behind. The title refers to the possible proof that Robert, who has suffered for years with mental illness, has produced a ground breaking work on the nature of prime numbers. Or has the work actually been done by Catherine, as she claims? She has cared for her father during his long illness and sacrificed a promising mathematical career of her own. The play explores the mystery of mathematics and the intense relationships between the central characters. The play is set in present day Chicago.

After a successful opening on Broadway in 2001 when it won the Tony Award for the Best Play. It transferred to London’s Donmar Warehouse in 2003 where Gwyneth Paltrow took the leading role as Catherine. She then starred alongside Anthony Hopkins in the 2005 film version.
